Sauze di Cesana is a municipality located in the Upper Dora Riparia Valley, which was part of the Dauphiné, initially the domain of the Dauphins of Vienna and then of the Royal Family of France until the 14th century. The historical and political events of this village were first dominated by the French (traces of this can still be seen in the church of S. Restiuto) and subsequently by the Italians, with the transition to the Savoy in 1713 (Treaty of “Utrecht”). The name of the town appears in medieval documents in which it is called Salise Cesanae e Saude and later, in 1516, it appears as Sallicia Sezanio; Sauze as the willow tree therefore, but also as an upstairs or balcony. The village of Sauze di Cesana revolved around the Church of San Restituto dating back to the 12th century, a meeting place for peasant families whose life was characterized by hard work. In this village built over the centuries with skilful harmony of shapes and materials chosen with care as well as the quality of the materials found on site, a devastating fire in July 1962 took everything away.
