Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena: historical notes This medieval village, which has been part of the Guide to the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy since 2007, owes its name to the Castle and the mountain of the overlying Rocca Barbena (1142 m above sea level). The castle was built in the 11th century by the Clavesana family, on the road that connected the Ligurian coast to the first fertile plains of present-day Piedmont, with a military defensive function. Today it is privately owned by a Milanese family who has undertaken conservative renovations to maintain its high historical, artistic and cultural value intact. A walk among the "alleys" From the panoramic parking lot a small road takes us to the heart of the village. After a downhill stretch we arrive in Piazza della Torre. A beautiful medieval tower stands out in one corner. One side of the square is almost completely occupied by the Oratorio dei Disciplinanti, with its small bell gable and fresco of Santa Maria Maddalena. This was where the meetings of the notables who made decisions regarding the life of the village took place. In the other corner we find a stone fountain preceded by a portico with stone seats: ideal for a break and refreshment. The church dedicated to the Assumption has a beautiful bell tower that seems to merge with the facade, it was built in the late Middle Ages and completely modified inside
